Abstract

Nigeria’s pervasive insecurity has spawned a mental health crisis among its students with far reaching consequences for their academic, social and emotional well-being. This paper examined the vital role of secondary school counsellors in addressing insecurity-related issues among Nigerian students. Insecurity has become a pervasive concern in Nigeria, affecting students’ mental health, academic performance and overall well being. School counsellors are strategically positioned to provide support and interventions to mitigate the impact of insecurity on students. This study explore the challenges that students face in the context of insecurity, the importance of school counselling services and the ways in which school counsellors can provide support and interventions to promote resilience, coping skills, and emotional well-being among students,  and made suggestions for increased investment in school counselling services to address the psychological toll of insecurity.
