PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AND SOCIAL ANXIETY AS CORRELATES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING OF UNDERGRADUATES OF CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU UNIVERSITY, IGBARIAM CAMPUS.
Abstract
This study examined psychological distress and social anxiety as correlates of psychological wellbeing of undergraduates in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu university, Igbariam campus. The study was guided by two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The participants were 200 university undergraduates randomly sampled from the study area. Accidental sampling technique was employed to draw the sample of the study. Three major instruments thus: Psychological Distress, Social Anxiety scales and psychological wellbeing scale were used for data collection. The data collected were statistically analyzed using test of significance of Pearson’s correlation. The findings of the study showed that there was a significant relationship (r = -.333 p <0.05) between psychological distress and psychological well-being among university students. It also indicated that there was a significant relationship between social anxiety and psychological wellbeing among undergraduates in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. Based on the findings of the study, the study recommended that the university management should create an enabling environment that will be stress free to enable the students adjust easily in the school environment. In addiction psychologists, teachers and the school management should work as a team in the fight against situation and conditions that will provoke anxiety.
