RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TECHNOSTRESS AND ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ANAMBA STATE

Abstract


This study investigated the relationship between technostress and  academic  engagement of undergraduate university students in Anambra State.  The study adopted a correlational survey research design.   The population of the study comprised 1,600 undergraduate university students from the Faculties of Education of the two public universities in Anambra State, namely, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus.  Purposive sampling method was used to select 160 first (1st) year undergraduate students from both universities.  This method was employed in order to ensure that the students were from the Faculties of Education in both Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Chukwuemeka Ojukwu universities, for adequate representation, since most of them are exposed to the use of smart phones and computers.     The two 4-point scale standardized Technostress and Students’ Academic Engagement Questionnaires were used for data collection.  The adapted instruments were pilot-tested using 40 university students from outside the study area.  The internal consistency of the instrument was tested using Cronbach Alpha yielding an index of 0.74, for the technostress-scale and 0.80 for student academic engagement scale, showing that the instruments were reliable. The findings revealed that technostress had a very low positive relationship with students’ academic engagement.  This suggests that technostress had marginal or no relationship with academic engagement.  It was also found that technostress is statistically significantly related to students’ academic engagement. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that social support and more training on (ICT) information and communication technology be provided for students to help cushion the effects of technostress and facilitate the proper use of learning tools such as the artificial intelligence and other forms of technology.
