Abstract

The study investigated the appraisal of teachers’ human rights in the discharge of their lawful duties in the public secondary schools in Anambra State. Two research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all the teachers in the 263 public secondary schools in Anambra State numbering 4,370. Random sampling technique was used to draw 984 teachers which formed the sample for this study. The researchers structured an instrument entitled “Appraisal of Teachers’ Human Rights Educational Questionnaire” (ATHREQ) which was used to elicit data from the respondents. Internal consistency of the instrument was ascertained using Cronbach’s Alpha method which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.83 which was adjudged satisfactory for a study of this nature. The data collected from the field were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed among others that most teachers’ are not aware of their fundamental human rights in line of duty which has caused them wallowing in ignorance. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should be updated from time to time of their fundamental human right in the discharge of their duties to avert breach of their inalienable human right.
